Introduction

Our book is designed is to equip students with the tools that, as free and independent thinkers, they need to make informed judgments about campus controversies for themselves. The chapters consist of five essential tools: (1) classic theoretical justifications for free speech, (2) doctrine relating to the First Amendment, (3) social science insights into the way society engages in expression, (4) the relationship between academic freedom and free speech on campus, and (5) historical and contemporary perspectives on the university and free speech. Supplementary material for each appears on this site.
